AKC Breeder of Merit
The AKC Breeder of Merit program recognizes responsible breeders who have gone above and beyond on health issues, temperament, and genetic screening, as well as to the individual care and placement of puppies in responsible homes.
Program Requirements
The Breeder of Merit Program is open to all purebred dog breeders that meet the following requirements:
- Have a history of at least 5 years involvement with AKC events
- Have earned AKC Conformation, Performance or Companion event titles on a minimum of 4 dogs from AKC litters they bred or co-bred
- Be a member of an AKC club
- Certify that applicable health screens are performed on your breeding stock, as recommended by your breed’s Parent Club
- Demonstrate that 100% of the puppies produced are individually AKC registered

A Healthy Hound
Below is the recommended health testing for Otterhounds. Breeders that are in compliance with all health testing will receive this green checkmark in their kennel listing. ✅
SCREENING: TESTING OPTIONS:
Hip Dysplasia One of the following:
British Veterinary Association (BVA) hip evaluation. Results registered with OFA.
OFA Radiographic Hip Evaluation
PennHIP Evaluation. Results registered with OFA.
Elbow Dysplasia One of the following:
British Veterinary Association (BVA) Evaluation
OFA Radiographic Elbow Evaluation
Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia OFA DNA Based evaluation from an approved laboratory
DNA Repository Participation in the OFA/CHIC DNA Repository (Blood Sample Required)
